The Magic of Revision

Does revision play a role in our writing? The ted talk, “the magic of revision” by Obert Skye describes the importance of revision. Throughout his speech, he mentions the need of revision and how we are influenced by it. Revision may be seemed as a dreadful process, but it is what can take a mediocre writing to excellent writing. Revision is what takes our writing quality to the next level. Students throughout their high school or college career, who constantly avoid revision results in their assignments being inconsistent or lacking quality. Revising our stories and essays can help us express clearer our ideas, which can make the ideas we are trying to tell better. Additionally, the reason our ideas are worth sharing is revision, without revision our ideas could be hidden and lost. I agree with Skye’s view and argument that magic is the revision in process because we tend to believe revision is not necessary, without being conscious it could take our writing to the next level.

Based on the video, In the writing process, the most frustrating step, but the most crucial step is revision. Revision is what makes our assignments tell the right story and express the right idea. he starts his speech with a lot of similes about experiences and writing. One of his comparisons is when Skye states, “not everything I have experienced in life is wonderful just like everything we first write down is not perfect.” In other words, this illustrates when we finish our first draft from any assignments, it does not mean it is good quality. Also, Revision is what makes our ideas worth sharing. In his speech, he describes, “revision as the good cop to your bad cop”. This empathize the importance of revision by understanding that revision can turn any assignment from “unsatisfactory” to “satisfactory” paper. At last, revision is known as the “detective of writing” because it solves the mistakes that can turn your writing to be better and complete.  life is revision, our ideas need to be properly revised to change much more than it once was.

Skye shows a good point when he states that revision is the most dreadful step in the writing process, as well as one that could turn your assignments into worthy assignments. This relates to my life because revision is the only way my academic performance has improved in college. Before enrolling into City College, I never used to do revision because I felt it was not necessary and it was tedious. Also, I felt like it was pointless and a waste of time because my English teacher would just give a good grade to all students, which made motivated students become less motivated. In my first year of college, revision has been essential to obtain success. The process of revising has been tiring, but essential in some ways by making my essays go from a B- to -A. At last, from so much revision I had done throughout the semester, I believe my writing skills has improved. Additionally, revision has become the key to have a better GPA in my first semester in college.

Furthermore, one part of the video that caught my attention is when he expresses revision as the detective of writing because it makes sense since revision uncover our mistakes. However, I believe revision is not only the detective of writing since revision is an aspect that people encounter in every subject. For example, in math, it is necessary to revise and revise to see if the proper formula is being used, if the answer is correct, and detect if any mistakes are made towards getting the answer. Every time when I am required to watch videos to study for my exams, the first advice online tutors would say is revise. In math, there are certain ways to revise if the answer is correct. The first way is by going over every step. The second way is by being aware of different methods to get the same answer. Therefore, Revision is not only influential in the writing process, but also in other subjects that demand revision.

Moreover, the structure of Skye speech connects to what we learned in class about rhetorical situations. Throughout his speech, I was conscious of the usage of rhetorical situations. I noticed that the rhetorical situations that played a role in his speech were purpose, stance, exigence, and the audience. When his speech started, he began by talking about himself, followed by doing similes between experiences and writing, which made his stance stronger on the importance of revision. He seems to have a motivation that burns him inside to talk about the significance of revision. As he continues talking and connecting experiences with writing, the passion for revision is explicit. The audience that he targets is clear, which is the people who do not perform revision on their assignments. As he is states is points, it made me think a lot of how revision has impacted my life in college. His purpose on his speech is straightforward. He explicitly explains that the most important step in the writing process is revision, but we do not pay attention to it. At last, rhetorical situation played a significant role throughout his speech.

In conclusion, revision is a process in turning stories, essays, and assignments into a much-upgraded papers. Many of us do not see revision as important because it takes time. However; revising as much as possible is the process in discovering the mistake we make in our writing. In addition, people should take their time to revise their papers, in order to improve their writings and express their ideas correctly.
