Investigating Careers Reflection

Prior to this essay, the exploratory essay was done. The exploratory essay carried similar content as the research critical analysis. I understood the requirements of the paper by comparing the descriptions of the research critical analysis and the descriptions of the exploratory essay to see what new information I would need to add. The research critical analysis focused more into the research done after the final exploratory essay. And it takes a step a further because it did not only focus on majors, but more into careers and jobs. Additionally, the appendix and the functional job analysis for a job was new in the research critical analysis. This assignment required a lot of research on myself, but also research on the internet investigating majors and careers. Most importantly, setting up interviews with professionals that already had the careers, I am interested. For this assignment, I already had an outline. However, I tried to focus on what we discussed in class by using the “TEA” method. Referring to the CLO, I executed the usage of rhetorical situations and research throughout my essay.

Moreover, the usage of rhetorical situations impacted my writing. The rhetorical situations that played a role in my writing were purpose, exigence, audience, and stance. The purpose of this essay was to inform readers about the majors and careers, I could pursue in the future. This essay assisted me to explore different majors, careers, and backups choices in case my plans do not work out. In the process of writing my essay, the rhetorical situation that influenced my writing the most was audience. Thinking and understanding the importance of having an audience was essential in order to guide the readers on what I will be discussing throughout my essay. I believe this essay can be helpful to people, who are confused on what to pursue in the future. People reviewing my essay could see all the research, interviews, and homework I did to be capable to have certain careers with backup plans. Stance played a role in my essay because I was stating my perspectives about my future goals. Also, exigence played a role in my essay because my essays illustrate the importance of doing research in order to find out what majors and careers I am interested. The rhetorical situations played role in shaping my essay better and it assisted me in thinking outside the box about whom I want the audience to be for this essay and the word choice throughout my assignment.

Referring to the course learning outcome, most of the requirements were met.  One of the requirements I met was to develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising and editing by using an outline containing the “TEA” method for each paragraph. In class, I had the opportunity to draft and outline my essay. Then, I took the essay for revision at the writing center.  Also, I practiced systematic use of citation convention. I had to quote using APA format throughout my essay. Another requirement I met was research, I did research based on majors and careers. For example, psychology, biology, psychologist, and physician assistant. At last, the usage of rhetorical situation was essential because it influenced my word of choice and it assisted me in organizing my essay better. Moreover, I took my essay twice to the writing center. Unfortunately, I was unable to take my essay as many times as possible because of Thanksgiving week. So, I found peer review helpful because my peers gave me feedback on what to fix while I am reviewing my essay. The first time I went to the writing center, I went to fix punctuations and grammar mistakes. The second time, I went for my last revision to check the content of my essay. Besides taking my assignment to the writing center, I uploaded my essay to Grammarly as my last revision.

Finally, I enjoyed doing research for this essay. Before coming to city college, I had done research in careers and majors for a long period of time, but this essay taught me new ways to research. All this work contributed me into having multiple backups instead of sticking with one plan only. Since this is 30% of my grade, my goal is to get the highest grade as I can.
